Some of today’s biggest pop stars will reportedly be covering Amy Winehouse’s most beloved songs to support the charity established in her honor, the Amy Winehouse Foundation. And Lady Gaga is among them.

Winehouse’s father Mitch spoke with The Sun about the project, saying he asked Gaga and she said yes. There’s no word yet about what she will record, but we couldn’t help thinking of three songs we’d love to hear Mother Monster interpret.
“I Heard Love is Blind”
Off Winehouse’s 2003 album Frank, this jazz-influenced song about the gray area of cheating showcased her true vocal abilities. And, as such, it seems like an ideal platform for Gaga to offer listeners something they may not have heard as often from Winehouse’s repertoire. At just over two minutes, it’s a short song, but the vocal runs and the way Winehouse staggered the meter could offer Gaga a strong option with which to honor the kind of music Winehouse loved best.
“Tears Dry On Their Own”
Even though it’s a Winehouse original, “Tears Dry On Their Own” sounds as if it came straight out of the 1960s. Gaga might be a pop/EDM queen, but from her work with Tony Bennett it’s clear she loves–and has a voice made for–singing the standards. Where Winehouse sounds restrained on the version from her 2006 album Back to Black, we’d love to see Gaga rip off all constraints and deliver a powerhouse vocal performance that pays homage to Winehouse while taking this song in a new direction.
“You Know I’m No Good”
Gaga loves playing all sorts of different parts, and given the vixen-like persona that comes across not only lyrically but melodically in “You Know I’m No Good,” she could have fun interpreting this memorable song from Back to Black. There’s something snaky about this number, as Winehouse’s vocal delivery wends and winds and practically slithers with desire. Gaga’s vocal register seems tailor-made to cover this song, keeping her in more alto territory and allowing her to put her distinct stamp on it.
